• Setup
  • • Each player chooses a hero and chooses a side of the sheet to use.
    • Each player takes:
      • 1 hero standee
      • 1 team-up card matching the hero. Place it with the greyed out side up.
      • 2 support cards that match both heroes from the chosen hero sheet. Choose 1 to place face up and place the other face down.
      • 1 support card with a with a card back that matches only the chosen here, place it face down.
    • Each player chooses an aspect and takes:
      • 1 aspect sheet, with the shattered side face down.
      • 1 boosted (colored border) and 2 standard (grey border) aspect tokens.
        • If playing with 2 players or solo: Each hero begins the game with 1 additional standard aspect token.
      • 1 aspect stand that matches the color of the chosen aspect sheet.
    • The players attache their aspect bases to their heroes.
    • Place the board.
    • Place the threat tracker and the team up tracker on space zero of their respective tracks.
    • Place the Bifrost token on its slot on the Asgard space.
    • Choose a nemesis and place the following near the board:
      • Its nemesis sheet
      • Matching standee
      • Nemesis-specific enemy card
      • the 4 nemesis-specific enemy standees
    • Take the 3 mission cards matching the nemesis and stack them in ascending order by the roman numerals in the title bar (I on top). Place it next to the nemesis mission slot on the board.
    • Shuffle the side mission cards and place it in a face down deck next to the board.
    • Create a supply of progress, damage, combo, suppression, and overrun tokens near the board.
    • Place the stun token and dice near the game board.
    • Players choose 1 hero to be the 1st player and they receive the 1st player token.
    • The 1st player chooses a numbered space on the board to place the Iliad token.
    • Place the nemesis on the space shown in the upper right corner of the nemesis sheet.
    • Starting with the 1st player, each player places their hero's standee on any of the 5 bases on the board (that does not have a hero).
      • Bases are New York, Atlantis, Madripoor, Wakanda, and the Iliad.
    • Shuffle the standard 30 event cards and select 9 at random (return the rest to the box).
      • Separate these into 3 face down piles of 3 cards.
      • Shuffle 1 nemesis specific event into each of the piles and shuffle those piles.
      • Stack all 3 piles into single stack to form the event deck.
    • Pick a first strike card and place it face up on top of the nemesis mission deck. Return all of the others to the box.
    • Resolve the first strike "Setup" from left to right as follows:
      • Search the enemy cards for the 3 cards that match the enemy pod icon and place those next to the game board.
      • Place all the matching enemy standees and place them next to the enemy cards that match their rank icon.
      • For each spawn enemy icon that shows pips <= to the indicated number of heroes, place an enemy of the shown rank on the indicated space.
      • Draw the top card of the side mission deck and place it next to any empty side mission slot. If there is a board space indicated, place a mission token on that space (tokens match the color of the slot).
• Gameplay

  • The game is played over a number of rounds, with each round being 2 phases. The players win by completing the 3 nemesis missions and then defeating the nemesis in the final showdown.

  • Hero Phase
    • • Each hero takes a turn, starting with the 1st player and going clockwise.
      • Each turn consists of a hero spending an aspect token 1 action.
        • The token is placed on an aspect slot on a card or component.
        • Each slot can only hold 1 token.
        • Actions with the "BOOST" keyword can give you additional benefits if you spend a boosted aspect token.
      • After the heroes have spent all of their aspect tokens, proceed to the Nemesis phase.

      Aspect Actions

      • Move: The hero moves their standee to an adjacent space (connected by dotted lines) a number of times up to their move value.
      • Fight: This allows the hero to attack an enemy in their space.
        • Roll the number of dice matching the attack value (ATK).
        • For each success, the enemy suffers 1 damage.
      • Defy: This allows the hero to place progress on a mission (that requires a Defy action).
        • Roll the number of dice matching the defy value (DFI).
        • Apply successes as described by the mission.
      • Rest: This action allows a hero to recover damage and charge support cards.
        • Roll the number of dice matching the tactic value.
        • Add the number of successes to their automatic successes on their rest action.
          • The total successes can be split between recover and charge effects.

      Hero Abilities

      • Some hero abilities require an action token, and some do not. The latter are considered to be always active.
      • Some abilities have a PRIMED or EMPOWERED icon and those cannot be resolved without a primed or empowered token.

      D.A.G.G.E.R. Actions

      • If a hero is on a base, they can place an aspect token on the base's aspect slot to perform this action.
      • Resolve that base's D.A.G.G.E.R. effect.
      • The hero may place their hero mission into their hero mission slot (if not there already).
      • If there is an overrun token on the base, D.A.G.G.E.R. actions can be performed if called for by a mission, but you cannot resolve the D.A.G.G.E.R. effect or place hero missions into play.
      • Note: Asgard is not a base and cannot be overrun.
  • Nemesis Phase

    • Perform the following actions to resolve the nemesis phase.

    • 1. Advance Threat
      • • Threat advances by:
          • The threat value on the nemesis sheet.
          • 1 for each non-nemesis enemy in play.
          • 1 for each overrun base.
          • The threat value of any side or hero missions (that have a threat value).
    • 2. Check Nemesis Mission
      • • Check the top card of the nemesis mission deck to see if it is completed. It can be completed by either passing or failing.
          1. Check the progress, and if there are progress tokens >= to progress value, the mission is passed.
             • Note that some missions have a value that is based on player count.
             • If the completed mission was the 1st strike, remove it from game and reveal the 1st nemesis mission.
             • For any other mission, if passed, flipe the completed mission and slide it under the top fo the game board so that only the green checkmark effect is visible. Then, resolve the effect.
          2. Check the mission's threat value and if >= to the value on the threat track, the mission has failed.
             • If the failed mission was the 1st strike, remove it from the game and reveal the 1st nemesis mission.
             • For any other mission, flip it and slide it under the board so that the red "X" is showing and resolve that effect.
          3. If any mission was completed (passed or failed), reset the threat track to zero.
             • If the mission was a nemesis mission, also spawn a new side mission.
        • If the final nemesis mission was completed: Proceed to the Final Showdown.
    • 3. Resolve Event Cards

      • If there are no event cards in the event deck, the players lose the game. Otherwise, resolve an event card.

        • Resolve the text of the event.
        • Resolve the ongoing mission effects at the bottom of all active missions.
        • Spawn a new side mission in an empty side mission slot.
          • If there is not an empty slot, instead advance threat by 1 + number of heroes.
        • Resolve the ability on the nemesis sheet that matches the icon.
        • Activate enemies shown in the bottom left of the card.
          • The activation order is in power order (1-4), Elite, then Nemesis.
          • If there are multiple enemies of the same rank, the players choose the activation order.
          • When activating enemies, they resolve the 1st item (not all) in this list that they can:
            1. Attack a hero in its space
               • If there are multiple heroes, players choose which hero is attacked.
               • Suffer damage equal to the enemy's power value.
            2. Overrun a base in its space
               • Place an overrun token on the base, covering the text.
            3. Move
               • The enemy moves 1 space toward the nearest operational base in its region. If there is a tie, the 1st player chooses the base it moves towards.
               • If there is no operational base in the region, the enemy moves towards the nearest operational base.
        • The nemesis follows the same rules as other enemies (above).
          • If the nemesis is stunned, just remove the stun token and damage, but don't resolve an attack/overrun/move.
        • Spawn enemies as shown on the bottom of the event card.
          • This is done in the same manner as during setup.
          • If all enemies of the rank shown are already on the board, advance threat by that enemy's rank instead.
            • For nemesis specific enemies, advance it by the nemesis threat value (on the nemesis sheet).
        • Discard the event card.
  • End of Round
    • • All players return all their aspect tokens to their supply.
      • Pass the 1st player marker clockwise.
  • Final Showdown
    • • Flip the nemesis sheet to its final showdown side and discard all stun and damage tokens that were on it.
        • All other tokens remain on it.
      • Follow the directions on the nemesis sheet for the unique showdown rules.
      • All other missions and enemies remain in play and function as normal during the final showdown.
      • Players should check completed missions for any effects that start now.
      • Suppression tokens have an effect based on the final showdown rules.
      • Note the new rules for nemesis activation during the final showdown.
• Winning and Losing
  • • If the heroes bring the nemesis health to zero during the final showdown, they win.
    • If any of the following happens, the heroes lose:
      • Threat reaches 20
      • All 5 bases are overrun
      • An event is unable to be drawn.
      • If all heroes are defeated while their "shattered" side of their aspect sheets are face up.
      • If a player is eliminated and the final showdown is not started by the end of the next hero phase, the players lose.
• Additional Rules
  • Nearby and Overrun
    • • Nearby means either the same space or an adjacent space.
        • Heroes, enemies, or space is not nearby itself.
      • Bases are overrun when attacked by an enemy.
        • An overrun token is placed on the base.
        • While overrun, the D.A.G.G.E.R. effect cannot be used.
        • While overrun, hero missions cannot be put into play there.
        • The D.A.G.G.E.R. can still be resolved if called for by a mission.
        • If all bases are overrun, the heroes lose the game.
  • Support Cards
    • • Support cards are either face up or exhausted.
      • A ready support card can be used.
      • Exhausted support cards can be charged (place a progress token). When it is fully charged, it is readied. Flip it over and discard the progress tokens.
  • Empowered and Primed
    • • When a hero becomes empowered, they place an empowered token on their player sheet.
        • They cannot gain a 2nd token (if they already have 1).
        • Empowered tokens can be spent to add 1 success to a die roll (after rolling).
        • Empowered tokens can be spent to use combo abilities (blue border).
          • Some combo abilities require an aspect token to activate, while some are situational.
          • When activating a combo ability, advance the team-up track by 1.
      • When an enemy is primed, place a primed token near their standee.
        • To resolve a primed combo ability, a hero must discard a a primed token from each enemy the ability would affect.
          • When activating a combo ability, advance the team-up track by 1.
  • Team-up Abilities
    • • Players can spend team-up at any time to ready their team-up cards.
        • Reduce the track by the cost shown on the card and flip it face up.
      • When the team-up card is used, it is exhausted (flipped over), but it can be readied again by spending team-up.
      • Unless otherwise specified, team-up can be spent, and team-up abilities can be used, at any time, even to interrupt other game effects.
  • Missions
    • • If a mission has a progress value, that many progress tokens must be placed on it to complete it.
        • Some progress values are based on the number of heroes.
      • If the mission's progress value shows an asterisk, the mission is completed based on its described condition.

      Side Missions

      • When a side mission is revealed, place the top card of the deck in 1 of the 3 side mission slots (that is open).
        • If it indicates a board space, place the matching token on that space of the board as a reminder.
        • If there is no empty slot, advance threat equal to 1 + number of heroes.
      • Some side missions are elite enemies. Place their standee in the space indicated.
      • When a side mission has enough progress on it, or the elite enemy is defeated, it is completed.
        • Advance the team-up track by the number indicated in the upper left, or lower left if it is an elite enemy.
        • Discard the mission card.

      Hero Missions

      • These begin the game in a hero's play area.
      • When a hero performs a D.A.G.G.E.R. action at a base, they can place the mission face up in the hero mission slot (yellow) if it is empty.
      • These are completed in the same way as other missions.
      • When completed:
        • The mission is discarded.
        • The hero gains their hero specific support card.
      • Other heroes can help complete your hero mission.

      Nemesis and 1st Strike Missions

      • There are 3 missions that make up the nemesis deck, unique to the nemesis.
      • Players must complete a 1st strike mission before they can start working on the 1st nemesis mission.
      • Nemesis missions are only completed during the nemesis phase and can be failed when threat advances.
  • Damage and Defeat
    • • Enemies or heroes are defeated when they have damage equal to their health.
      • When a standard enemy is defeated, remove the standee from the board.
      • When a nemesis is defeated before the final showdown:
        • Place a stun token on the nemesis sheet.
        • The active player may choose an adjacent space to move the nemesis to.
        • A stunned nemesis cannot attack, overrun, or move on its next turn. Instead the damage and stun tokens are removed.
      • Note that the nemesis' health is based on the player count during the final showdown.
      • If the nemesis is defeated during the final showdown, the players win.
      • When a hero is defeated:
        1. Advance the threat track by the number of heroes in the game.
        2. Return the hero's standee, mission card, and hero-specific support cards to the box.
           • Shared support cards remain.
        3. Remove all tokens from the character sheet.
        4. Flip the hero's aspect sheet to its shattered side.
        5. Flip the hero sheet to its other side.
        6. Ready the new hero's team-up card for free (ignoring the team-up track).
        7. At the start of the next hero phase, place the new hero standee on any base.
      • If a shattered hero is defeated, the player is out of the game.
        • Per player effects still count the eliminated player.
        • The remaining heroes have until the end of the next hero phase to begin the final showdown, otherwise they lose the game.
