• Setup
  • • Shuffle the site boards and randomly choose 1 and place it with the advanced side face up. Place the rest of the site boards with the compass side face up.
    • Each player chooses a color and takes the vehicles of that color, then each player:
      • Places 1 vehicle on the left most space of each site track.
      • Places their player token on the score track.
    • Select 6 roles (decks) to use for the game and shuffle them together to form the main deck.
      • Perform any role/site specific setup:
        • Botanists: Place the botanist frame near the site board.
        • Curators: Each player takes 1 museum board and 6 relic tokens (1 of each color).
        • Linguists: Place the linguist track near the site boards and each player places a vehicle on space 0.
        • Professors: Place the 6 professor tokens (1-6) near the site boards.
        • Ta-Sekhet-Ma'at: Each player places 2 vehicles on the left most space of this site instead of 1.
• Gameplay

  • The game is played over a number of "seasons" based on player count.

    • 2-3 players: 2 seasons
    • 4-6 players: 3 seasons
  • Start a New Season
    • 1. Shuffle the deck and deal 1 card to each player.
      2. Deal cards from the deck = to the nuimber of players + 2 face up in the center-ish of the table (order of cards does not matter). This is called the "display".
      3. Build the deck:
         1. Split the deck in half-ish.
         2. Shuffle the 3 monkey cards into 1 half.
         3. Place the half without the monkey cards on top of the monkey half to form the deck.
      4. Determine a 1st player:
         • If it's the first season, pick someone randomly.
         • Otherwise, the person who drew the last monkey card goes 1st.
  • Playing a Season

    • Each turns consists of 1 of 2 actions.

      NOTE that you can never have more than 10 cards in your hand.

      • Gain 1 card.
        • Either take 1 card from the display
          • Do not replenish the card in the display.
        • (or) Take cards from the top of the deck.
          • If the display is empty, take 2.
          • If the display is not empty, take 1.
          • If you draw a monkey card, place it face up on the table near the deck and then draw another card.
            • If this is the 3rd monkey card drawn, the season ends immediately.
      • (or) Play an expedition. An expedition consists of a number of cards from your hand played face up as a set in front of you.
        • Cards in an expedition must all be the same color or all the same role (character art).
        • Choose 1 card to be the expedition leader and play it on top of the splayed stack of cards.
          • If your expedition size is large enough, you may advance your vehicle at the site with the matching color. The size of the expedition (number of cards) must be >= to the requirement size to cross the next line on the board.
            • You can never advance more than 1 space with a single expedition.
            • Note that you can play an expedition even if you can't advance on the track.
            • If your leader is a Student, do not advance your vehicle at the site, regardless of expedition size.
          • You may use the effect of your leader's role.
        • After resolving the expedition, all other cards not in the expedition are added to the display (you will have zero cards left).
  • Season End

    • The season ends immediately when someone draws the 3rd monkey card.

      1. Return all cards in hands/display to the deck.
      2. Resolve any season end role effects.
      3. Player gain the number of points shown in their vehicle's space on each site.
         • Important: Vehicles are not reset and remain on their current spaces.
      4. Remove all Mercenary cards (if in the game) from expeditions.
      5. Gain points from expeditions based on the expedition size (see the table below. If it is not the last season, return all expedition cards to the deck.
      6. If this was the last season, proceed to game end, otherwise start a new season.

• Game End

  • After the final season, the player with the most points wins.

    If there is a tie:

    1. The player with the largest expedition in the final season wins.
    2. If #1 does not resolve the tie, keep comparing expedition sizes until 1 player has a larger expedition.
• Roles

  • The Botanist

    

    • Compare the size of your expedition with the expedition that currently has the botanist's frame (if any).
      • If your expedition is >= the current botanist's frame's expedition, gain 2 points and frame your current expedition with the botanist's frame.
    • Season end: The player with the botanist's frame gains 2 points and places it back in the central area.

    The Cartographer

    

    • If you advance your vehicle with this expedition, you may immediately play 1 additional expedition from your hand (and resolve it) before returning unplayed cards to the display.

    The Curator

    

    • Place a relic token matching the curator's color on your museum board.
      • Note that you can only have 1 relic of each color on your museum board.
    • Game end: Score points based on the number of different relics you have on your museum board

    The Guide

    

    • This expedition is considered to have 1 additional card for the purpose of advancing on the site track.

    The Linguist

    

    • Advance your vehicle on the linguist track a number of spaces = to the size of this expedition.
      • For each space with a linguist artifact that you that you stop in or pass through, advance 1 of your vehicles at any site, regardless of expedition size or threshold level.
    • Season End: The players (1 or tied) furthest on the linguist track gains 2 points.

    The Mercenary

    

    • Mercenaries cannot be expedition leaders.
      • If you ever have 10 mercenaries in your hand at the start of your turn, you just discard all of them to the display and end your turn.
    • Mercenaries are wild. They can be added to any expedition regardless of color or role.
    • Season end: Before totaling points for expedition sizes, all mercenaries are removed from all expeditions.

    The Patron

    

    • After returning remaining cards to the display, draw a number of cards equal to this expedition's size.
      • Cards are drawn from the deck, not taken from the display.

    The Photographer

    

    • Season end: Score this expedition as if it had 1 additional card.

    The Physician

    

    • Instead of returning your remaining cards to the display, you may keep a number of cards in your hand <= to the size of this expedition. The rest are returned to the display as normal.

    The Pilot

    

    • You may advance 1 of your vehicles at any site instead of the site matching the leader's color.
      • Your expedition size must still meet the requirements to pass the threshold.

    The Professor

    

    • Take 1 professor token <= to this expedition's size.
    • Season end: Total the value of each player's professor tokens:
      • The player (or tied players) with the highest total advances their vehicle 1 space on 1 site.
      • The player(s) with the lowest total (including zero) move 1 vehicle on 1 site (where they are not on the 1st space) to the left 1 space.
      • After movement, return all professor tiles to the supply.

    The Student

    

    • If the student is the leader of this expedition, it cannot advance a vehicle on any track.
    • Note: There are twice as many student cards in the deck as there are cards for other roles. This allows you to more easily create larger expeditions for season end points.
• Sites

  • Chichén Itzá

    • Vehicle advances: At the end of your turn after advancing on this site, draw up to the number of cards shown next to the threshold number you crossed.
      • These cards are drawn from the deck, not taken from the display.
      • Note that you are still limited to 10 cards.

    Rapa Nui

    • Season end: The player(s) whose vehicle is farthest along on this track gains 3 points and their vehicle is reset back to the left most space.
      • Other vehicles remain where they were.

    Ta-Sekhet-Ma'at

    • Vehicle advances: Choose 1 of your vehicles to advance.
    • Season end: Gain points shown in the space of your vehicle that is closest to the starting space.
      • Do not gain points for the other vehicle.

    Tantallon Castle

    • Season end: If your vehicle is alone on a space, you gain the points equal to the number in the large star, otherwise gain the points in the smaller star.

    Uluru

    • Vehicle advances: After advancing your vehicle, you can choose to gain the points for that space.
      • If you gain the points, reset your vehicle back to the left most space of the track.
    • Season end: Do not gain points for the position of your vehicle as you would normally do with locations at season end. Points can only be gained on this track via the above "vehicle advances".

    Ur

    • Season end: When the 3rd monkey card is revealed, in turn order, each player may immediately play a single expedition (resolving it as normal).
      • Note: The maximum size of the expedition played depends on your vehicle's position on the Ur track.
